HRC tote operators resort to strike
Tuesday, October 7, 2014
For last two days tote operators at HRC and some tote centres have resorted to flash strikes demanding increase in salaries and enhancing their job status from contract to permanent
It was few years back that the racing community was greeted with shock and surprise on a derby day when all the tote operators resorted to similar strike, luckily that day issue was solved within few hours. Now it has escalated to second consecutive day
Even though one cannot agree with their arm twisting tactics of holding tote operations which is the only source of income for club we cannot deny that tote operators often are at recieving end of punters fury which on many occasions turn into abuses.I myself have witnessed many incidents where this poor ladies were abused with liberal use of cuss words.I dont recall any action taken by club against such offenders. They are paid measely without any travel or other allowances, most of them munch their lunch within short time available in between races. On humanitarian ground they deserve better treatment as they play vital role in tote collections.
Issue of converting contract employees into permanent is rising in almost all gov department. There is serious need for modification of existing laws which puts too much of burden on departments and hence they avoid appointing permanent employees
HRC is a rich club,it can loosen its purse strings a little to make this aggravated racing community a bit happy.Remember the golden rule of business-Happy employees make business flourish
