This is what a winter race track is all about according to official website of HRC.
The Winter Race Track is tan bark based and is used during the winter period between November and February is 70' or 21.4 meters wide while the track length is about 2150 meters.
What is a Tanbark?
Shredded bark from which the tannin has been extracted, used to cover circus arenas, racetracks, and other surfaces. In other words track is same like a pathway found in forests or other woody area
.Difference between Monsoon track and Winter Track
Monsoon track is sand based, penotrometer reading ranges from 3.5 to as high as 5.4.Timings are slower when compared to Winter.Front runners have advantage on this track.Wear and tear to horse is minimal on this track and hence many classic and costly horses are run only on this track.Track is wider which allows multiple horses extending themselves in case of close finish.
Winter track is hard and as such penotrometer reading ranges from 2 to max 3.2.Timings are relatively faster.Wear and tear to horses is higher on this track.Track is relatively narrow when compared to Monsoon track.
Needless to say that transition from monsoon track to Winter track is not easy for most of the horses. In fact some horses perform well only on winter tracks.
It is indeed very difficult for speed rating analyst to assess the exact potential of horses based on their performances in Monsoon season and if they look for previous year winter runs they are bound to commit a mistake as no horse remains the same after one year.
It will be ideal if for first few meetings only the horses which have reduced handicap in Monsoon season are considered
Horses which are tracked on outergrass {OG} will be on job.
